Christmas shopping
Sorry I can't let this whole weather thing go. Especially as I hear about the six inches of snow in Illinois and the cold temps, it is so strange to be here. Last night we went Christmas shopping. Most people were in t-shirts, some in shorts. This morning it's foggy, rainy and 60 degrees. It's so interesting how, just like with music, we associate other things with moments and emotions in our lives. For me, cold weather and snow is what I associate with Christmas. Not having that almost makes it not feel like Christmas. As october rolled around it was still hot here. That was strange too because I grew up associating colder days, earlier sunsets and the last leaves falling with the start of basketball season. Even when my career was over I would still get that same old feeling in early october, that feeling that "the season" was about to start. Just another one of those things that are lodged into our memories and connected to concrete things in our everyday world.

Joel - you and Jen need to find a free Christmas concert to go to or a Christmas show or play to get in the mood! I know what you mean....the weather is associated with the holiday, so when we go home to Illinois, we will feel like ti's Christmas, as I heard they have a lot of snow right now. Hope it sticks so we can look at it, but hope we don't have to drive in it! Love, Mom

Forget the concert....you need to go to a grocery store and sit in the walk in cooler for a while. Might remind you of Illinois, especially since I've been outside shoveling snow for about 3 hours! I even found some of the leaves I didn't get around to raking this fall. And to think, I had wanted to mow the yard one more time.

i know exactly what you mean for both things...Christmas and an athletic season. it's still 80 in Miami and in no way feel like Christmas (although I do have some freindly reminders in my neighborhood- see my blog three days ago), finally the evenings have cooled down to about 60. i miss fall the most and it always reminded me of cross country season...it's as if running was in my blood during those three months of the year. everytime i smell crisp autumn leaves I want to lace up my shoes and run a couple miles. maybe that explains why i don't enjoy running in Miami as much...it's always off season in my mind!
